Spotlight on... Kensington
9 December 2022Kensington – a borough for people who want everything the capital offers at their fingertips.
- Kensington is home to the Victoria & Albert Museum, Science Museum, Natural History Museum and the Design Museum, along with many art galleries and theatrical and concert venues so there’s always something fascinating to do or see. Kensington Palace was the birthplace of Queen Victoria and has been home to young royals for more than three hundred years. You can wander through the magnificent King’s and Queen’s State Apartments, as well as enjoying a stroll through the Sunken Garden to see the statue of Diana, Princess of Wales.
- This area is full of beautiful residential squares with large period town houses, many of which have been converted into mansion flats, as well as terraced family homes and modern apartments. This reflects the population of Kensington, which splits between migratory renters coming and going and settled families.
- Kensington is something of a retail heaven! Not only do you have two of the capital’s best shopping streets in Kensington High Street and King’s Road; you’ll also find Harrods and Harvey Nichols in nearby Knightsbridge, plus Peter Jones in Sloane Square. There are also quirky ’one-off’ boutiques across the borough.
- Another landmark is Portobello Road Market which is in full swing on Saturdays, with a mile of hustle, haggle, colour, and energy at all the antique and vintage shops and stalls.
- Whether it’s brunch, lunch or afternoon tea you’re looking for, you’re sure to find it in the bustling local restaurants and cosy cafes. If craft beer, real ale or cocktails are more your thing then you will enjoy checking out the pubs and bars. There’s traditional, modern, jazz and plain old upmarket luxury to choose from.
- As well a good range of supermarkets, including Waitrose, Sainsburys, Marks and Spencer and Tesco, there are some great delicatessens with food from all over the world.
- Two wonderful parks offer 350 acres of green space for picnics, festivals, running and just walking the dog. Kensington Gardens houses the world-famous Serpentine Galleries and the Albert Memorial. In Hyde Park you can take advantage of the pay and play Tennis and Sports Hub, with its six floodlit all weather tennis courts, Astroturf pitch and bowling green, as well as visiting Speaker’s Corner on Sunday mornings to listen to enthusiasts expounding their views.
- Kensington is small enough so that you can walk or cycle almost everywhere, but you’ll be pleased to know that from South Kensington and Gloucester Road tube stations you can be in central London in just ten minutes. West Brompton overground connects to Clapham Junction in just over ten minutes and there is also a good network of buses, day and night.
